What happens next

It depends on where you got the ticket.

New York City

  • Traffic tickets that aren't criminal charges go to the DMV's Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB).
  • You plead guilty or not guilty. Not guilty means a hearing.
  • If you plead guilty, you can't change your plea.
  • If you don't answer on time, your license will be suspended.

Long Island and the rest of the state

  • Tickets go to a local court or traffic agency, not the NYC TVB.
  • The process and your options can be different from NYC.
  • Greg takes tickets in courts anywhere in New York State, including all 5 boroughs, Nassau and Suffolk.

Questions people ask

Should I just pay my ticket?

In New York City, paying a ticket means pleading guilty, and you can't change a guilty plea. The points, and any state fee they bring, come with it. Check what the ticket really costs you first. (DMV)

Can I plead guilty online?

Not if the conviction would suspend or revoke your license. Then you have to appear, or send the DMV a written statement instead. (DMV)

Is the state fee part of the fine?

No. The Driver Responsibility Assessment is a separate DMV fee, paid over 3 years on top of the fine, once you reach 6 points in 18 months. (DMV)

What points can cost you

Points count from the date of the ticket.

PointsWhat happens
AnyPoints only go on your record if you're convicted, and they stop counting toward your total 24 months after the violation date. (DMV)
6 in 18 monthsAn extra state fee. The Driver Responsibility Assessment is $100 a year for 3 years, plus $25 a year for each point over 6. (DMV)
11 in 24 monthsYou could lose your license. A DMV-approved defensive driving course can subtract 4 points when the DMV counts toward a suspension, but the points stay on your record. (DMV)
